Oddities...Korean Tidbits

Ahhh...there is no end to the strange things I discover about Korea.
My facts for the day:

1) There is a 'holiday' every 14th...as in every month.  Jinha (a Korean girl I work with) admits that this is a blatant marketing tactic...but it is kind of nice in a way.  Today was rose day...roses everywhere for sale.  I got one from a student of mine...a girl.  This is seen as completely strange...only the boys are 'supposed' to give me roses.

2) Plastic surgery is rampant in Korea.  The number one surgery....?  You want to know...don't you...?  Well, it's called Blepharoplasty, or Double-Eyelid Surgery.  It is essentially to create a fold in the typical Asian eyelid....giving them a more Western look.  It seems that pretty much every girl on TV has had this surgery...and a good number of the men.  (Breast implants are number two...followed by a particular type of Rhinoplasty where they create a bridge at the top of nose...not a common feature of Korean faces...but a Western must-have.  Still...beats the top surgery of a few years ago...not for the morally faint of heart: hymen-reconstruction.)

3) For those who can't afford surgery...namely middle school and high school girls....there's always super glue.  It seems high school girls actually glue their eyelids to create the double fold.  Ouch!

4) Korea is generally a pretty polite society, but there is one gaping hole, that I just can't reconcile....spitting.  I mean SPITTING. Spitting anywhere, anytime is perfectly acceptable. Old men are big offenders, but so are pretty young women.  And when I say anywhere I mean on the street, in building lobbies, on buses (the floor...not out the window) and the seeming favorite...in elevators. Ick!!

Hmmm...think I'll stop there. I had a terrible night's sleep last night and don't feel very literate at the moment.
I realize I really should write more often, but just don't get around to it.  I have cutie pictures of the kids on our second field trip and some other stuff I should write about....it'll happen...eventually.
For now I'll tease and say that I should have big news in the next couple days. You'll just have to check back to hear what....
Cheers!
