Land of munchkins. This entry was posted on 3/13/2007 3:27 AM and is filed under South Korea. After spending just a little over a week with my kindergarten class, I've already gotten to know my kids pretty well. I do spend 4.5 hours with them a day, after all. Even though they are tiny (4 and 5) and only speak Korean (despite my best efforts) they each have their own very distinct personality.
My little ones number seven...and they sure keep me busy. A little bit about them: Chaehun....Mr. Space Cadet! He's a little kind-hearted monster...with too much energy. He alternates between jibbering about nothing or staring into space...and he can always be found making 'telescopes' out of his papers. Chaehun got points for bringing strawberries to show and tell (yum!) and handing them out with a focus he hadn't demonstrated before...or since. Charles: Bigger than the other boys, he knows his vocab and is ready to shout it out. He's definitely clever...but also a whiner. Still, he can be counted on to answer questions no one else knows...at the top of his lungs usually. His favorite color is red. Nadia: The biggest girl. She is Miss Ennui...always ho-hum about our activities. She's got a spoiled-little-rich-girl vibe...but I'm trying to get her involved. Sometimes she puts on a happy face and seems like a big sister to the other girls. She's a handful...but then, they all are. David: Mater of the wry smile...he thinks he can get away with anything if he just flashes it. He's loud and unfocused, but generally a good kid. He's the only one who knows and uses please and thank you, which makes him rather endearing. His favorite color is blue....blue airplanes, blue apples, blue babies...he sure loves blue. Sophia: The littlest moppet! She is the absolute cutest thing! She cried the very first day (worrying me severely!) but has gotten it together and seems to like school now. She also seems to be the one the boys crush on (at such an early age!) You can find her holding my hand, holding my leg, tugging on my shirt and trying to sit in my lap whenever possible. Wendy: Quiet and cute she's a bit of a daydreamer. English doesn't like her tongue and some crazy pronunciations come out of her little mouth. She's always got her hair in pigtails and I usually have to re-fasten her clips several times a day. She's quick with a giggle when you engage her...but doesn't seem to get most of what's going on. I've got suspicions she might be dyslexic and am going to ask a Korean tacher to look at her Korean writing because all of her english letters are upside down, backwards and out of order. Tommy: Just adorable. He's the good egg. He's quiet and sweet and always smiling bashfully. His favorite color is yellow....which is invariably all over the page. No matter what, Tommy refuses to color in the lines. It's almost comical, but not quite. He's getting better though. He's also the only one who can use scissors with any sort of dexterity. So there's my group. 7 of the cutest little kids, all gathered in my room, smiling at me each morning. They certainly keep me busy and it seems like I never have all seven focused on the same thing, but we're making progress. My motivational stickers (get 5 checks, you get a sticker. 3 X's...naughty chair, oh no!) seem to be doing the trick. Slowly but surely I am going to teach these kids english...I promise you that!
